The prototype was one of two 40' 6" PS-1 boxcars experimentally built in September 1952, equipped with 6' Superior doors and 50-ton trucks, and stenciled "Cushion Underframe." In the year, hydro cushioning technology had not yet been developed. Does anyone know what system was adopted? There is not the WP name in the "All-Time List of Cars Equipped with Duryea Underframes" of the "STEAM ERA FREIGHT CARS" site.
The left advertinsement was quoted from Trains magazine Dec. issue of 1953. Crick to enlarge the image.

It is written in the book published in Japan in 1957 as follows.
"Meyer sliding sill" appeared after WWII, and Pullman-Standard company studied it vigorously. Today it is practically used as "P-S cushion underframe".... In the underframe, multilayer rubbers are placed between the stationary part of the underframe and the movable center sill. The AAR standard draft gears are attached to the each end of the movable center sill. The total capacity exceeds 120,000 ft-lb (5,200 kg-m). It is designed to fully compress at 13 mph (21 km/h) at a crash speed of 70-80 ton cars. As aforementioned, the reason for having a remarkable capacity as compared with the conventional one is that there are 7 in. (178 mm) traveling stroke of the center sill at max. P-S company has added snubbers, and calls it "C-U car." Its use is increasing more and more. (translated by the poster)

On page 80 of the book "Pullman-Standard Freigh Cars, 1900-1960", Edward S. Kaminski said that the GN series 21950-21964 and the N&W series 53995-53999 built both in 1954 had the Pullman-Standard cushion underframes. I think these devices are the same as those of WP. See also my blog "TransPacific R.R."

P.S. The Yesteryear Models also released this scheme in HO & N. There was a photo in the advertisement on page 82 of the September 2003 issue of MR magazine. The coloring was the same, including Herald. Oct. 18, 2022
